Arrest History in Brunswick County
The Brunswick County Sheriff's Department makes arrests in the county, serves warrants, provides court security, and routes local custody records. Lawrenceville Police handles incidents and arrests within the town. Alberta has a one-person police department supplemented by the sheriff and Virginia State Police patrol. Brodnax has its own police contact, but the town crosses the Brunswick and Mecklenburg line, so the exact place of an event can decide which county's court and jail records apply. Virginia State Police and special agents also keep their own arrest reports.
An arrest history can include officer reports and booking events across time, but it is not a conviction list. A Brunswick County arrest record may preserve the initial charge, arrest date, agency, bond decision, and release status. The prosecutor can amend or decline the charge. Brunswick County Arrests at MRRJ
Brunswick County participates with Dinwiddie and Mecklenburg in Meherrin River Regional Jail, known as MRRJ, rather than posting a separate county jail roster. The main facility opened in 2012 at 9000 Boydton Plank Road in Alberta. MRRJ describes a 697-person capacity and a complex with intake, booking, medical, visitation, housing, and support functions. Both men and women are held there. This local custody system is separate from Virginia's state-prison network.

What an Arrest Record Shows
A Brunswick County arrest entry describes custody at the time of intake. Common fields include the person's identifiers, arrest time and place, arresting agency, initial charge, incident number, transport and booking time, and the warrant or warrantless basis. Jail staff add booking identifiers, fingerprints, a photograph, property inventory, holds, bond data, and release or custody status. Public copies may redact victim or complainant details, juvenile information, Social Security numbers, medical facts, precise security placement, and active investigative material. Ask for segregable, nonexempt portions when only part of a sheriff record can be released.
Brunswick County Arrest Agency Records
The sheriff does not automatically own every arrest report simply because the person was booked through MRRJ. For a Brunswick County Sheriff's Department arrest, direct the request to Administrative Captain Brad Evans. The sheriff's FOIA page names the custodian and request channel. Supply the incident number, date, time, location, creating agency, and exact record requested. The general sheriff web form is a contact channel, not a dedicated records portal.
A Lawrenceville Police arrest begins with the town or department for the officer report, then may lead to MRRJ for booking and Brunswick courts for the filed charge. Alberta Police records begin with the town or police contact even when sheriff or VSP staff also worked the event. A Brodnax request must state the precise location because the county line affects dispatch, court, and jail routing. Trooper reports follow the VSP field-operations structure, while Virginia ABC or other special-agent reports remain with the issuing agency.
VFOIA generally gives a public body five working days to produce the record, deny with a legal basis, state it has no responsive record, or invoke seven more working days when a response is not practical in five. Reasonable actual costs can apply, and an estimate above $200 can require advance payment. These deadlines do not make all investigative or protected information public.
Recent Arrests and Booking Logs

A person arrested by a town officer can appear in the same regional system as a sheriff arrest because booking is centralized. A newly opened charge may also appear through OCIS 2.0 or Brunswick General District Court. Search by hearing date when name spelling is uncertain, then compare court number and arresting agency. Court data can lag behind the arrest because the magistrate and clerk steps follow the custody event. Brunswick County Arrests Versus VADOC
A recent Brunswick County booking often will not appear in the Virginia Department of Corrections locator. VADOC serves state custody and community-supervision records, while MRRJ handles local and regional jail custody. After sentence and transfer, the local result may disappear from current custody as the person begins to appear in VADOC data. Lawrenceville Correctional Center is a state prison located in Brunswick County, not the county jail, so its name does not prove a local arrest or prosecution.

VADOC states that locator data update daily but may still be inaccurate or out of date, so custody should be confirmed with the holding office. Requests for existing releasable state-custody records use the separate VADOC FOIA process.
Brunswick County Arrest Booking and Bond
Booking starts when an officer transports a person and the jail confirms authority for custody. Staff inventory property, create intake identifiers, take fingerprints and a photograph, enter charges and holds, and perform confidential medical and safety screening. A magistrate then addresses probable cause and release. Under Virginia Code ยง 19.2-82, a person arrested without a warrant must be taken promptly before a magistrate.
The Virginia magistrate program explains probable-cause, warrant, and bail functions. Virginia law should not be reduced to a supposed automatic 48-hour Brunswick County hold. A warrantless arrest has officer probable-cause paperwork; a warrant arrest adds the issued process and return. Neither document proves guilt. Arrests vs Convictions
An arrest proves that a custody action occurred, not that the alleged offense was proven. The arresting agency and MRRJ create the arrest and booking records. Brunswick County courts create the prosecution file and final order. VSP later assembles qualifying fingerprint-supported arrest and disposition data under its dissemination rules. Reporting gaps or timing can leave these sources out of sync, so the source must match the question.
